Hong Kong lacks a reading culture. The bestsellers list is full of comic books, weight loss guides, trashy romance chic-lits. What a shame. A lot of the books do not have to exist, and that is what makes their existence miraculous.
I digress. Speaking of SALT: A WORLD HISTORY,
As you may have guessed from the title, Salt is an exploration of the history of salt use from prehistoric times until today. In the course of which, not just the physical aspects of salt are treated, but also the cultural, political, economical and other aspects of our enduring obsession with salt. The focus of the book is too much orientated on the west, not enough on other cultures. But despite the flaw, it’s not a bad vacation read.
